Featuring a sample of Chuckii Booker's "Games", Mark Morrison's 1996 single "Return of the Mack" catapulted the British urban artist to newfound fame as the track became a Top Ten hit across Europe, while opening the U.S. market for him. With the hit single, Morrison, a gifted singer whose career up to that point had been plagued by run-ins with the law, became the first black male solo artist to reach number one in the '90s. His debut album, also titled Return of the Mack, followed and peaked at number four. "Let's Get Down," the album's 3rd single, reached the Top 40 that summer.

An an instant sensation during the late 1980's, topping the charts and earning comparisons to everyone from Prince to Michael Jackson, singer/songwriter/musician and New York native Terrence Trent D'Arby, aka Sananda Maitreya, was baptized the 'New Prince of Pop' for his powerful, soulful, and funky compositions. Indeed, his debut solo album, the epic Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby, would unleash an amazing barrage of hits with songs like “If You Let Me Stay,” “Wishing Well,” “Sign Your Name,” and the Smokey Robinson-through-Michael-Jackson cover “Who’s Loving You"--any wonder it was the first debut album in history to sell one million copies in just over 3 days. The 2nd single to be released from the album, "Wishing Well", written by D'Arby and Sean Oliver, would go Gold while reaching number one on both the Soul Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 on May 7, 1988.
From their joint album, Fan of a Fan: The Album, available in stores and online.

Indeep, a New York-based dance/pop group comprised of lead singer Réjane Magloire and Rose Marie Ramsey, scored a Top 10 R&B hit with their debut 1982 single "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." A huge hit in both disco clubs and skating rinks, the song would later be covered by many including Mariah Carey for her tenth album, Glitter. Unfortunately for Indeep, the Mike Cleveland and Reggie Thompson-produced "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" would be the group's only major hit, thus forever placing them in the "One-Hit Wonder" category of artists.

With the terrific news that Janet Jackson is working on her first new album in seven years this fall, this week's Friday Night Throwback is dedicated to the legendary singer. "The Pleasure Principle", the sixth single from the Janet's third studio album Control, was released in 1987. Written and produced by Monte Moir, the "independent woman" anthem debuted at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later reached its peak at number 14 on August 1, 1987. And while "The Pleasure Principle" became the only song released by Jackson to miss the top ten, nevertheless it became her fifth chart-topper on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and her third on the Hot Dance Club Play. The song is also remembered for its 'iconic', dance-heavy video directed Dominic Sena and a former MTV staple.
